Seniors Need Strength Training Exercise!

The National Institute on Aging recommends strength training of all major muscle groups 2-3x week. The American Institute for Cancer Research emphasizes regular exercise as a vital part of a healthy lifestyle to lower cancer risk and promote good health and healthy weight. Strength training or progressive resistance training for chronic health conditions is proven to improve day to day function and achieve more permanent improvements for cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cancer, depression, osteoporosis, lung function/rehabilitation, Parkinson's disease, and arthritis. The belief that joint inflammation, pain and inflexibility as a result of arthritis are best treated with rest and little movement is outdated. Strength training exercise has proved its worth in maintaining and restoring function for people with arthritis. Strength training also helps reduce low back pain by increasing the strength of the muscles that support the back.


A new study by Vancouver area health professionals suggest that seniors who take part in strength building exercise programs reap cognitive health benefits. They say their study shows that strength training needs to be better promoted to the public. Cognitive decline among seniors is considered a serious challenge, given the large percentage of the population that will be made up of seniors within 20 years. About 30% of seniors fall each year, and thousands suffer hip fractures. Such injuries raise the risk of death and costs the health care system millions of dollars. Seniors with cognitive impairment fall twice as much as their peers with no impairment. The exercise studies showed that  participants in the 1x week strength training had the best cognitive benefits...even one year later and the strength training participants did better than the balance and toning exercise training participants. This study suggests that weekly resistance training is cost saving and the right type of exercise for seniors to achieve maximum economic and health benefits.
